National Honours
Every year the Sussex Branch nominates
members of clubs throughout Sussex for National Awards. Clubs put forward
names of their members for consideration by the awards sub-committee of the
branch. To qualify you have to be a full member of the RLSS. Nominations
are sent to headquarters for national ratification, and once these are cleared
by the National Honours Committee, the various medals and certificates are awarded.

This year the following Club members have been nominated and will receive the following awards:
We would like to congratulate all the above members for achieving national recognition!
Is This A Record? In January a special presentation was made to three members of Worthing Life Guard Corps all aged 14. Nothing unusual, except, that the presentation was for the Distinction Award, the highest award in RLSS Lifesaving. Ellie Prail aged 14 in June 2009, George Linfield-Brown aged 14 in March 2009, both from Worthing and Richard Lintern aged 14 in May 2009 from Sompting. They all passed the pool section of the award at the Aquarena in December 2009, fourteen is the lowest age that the award can be taken. They all completed their Silver Cross open water award in the sea during the summer months. A magnificent achievement and it shows the considerable dedication they have all applied. Three all passing the award at the lowest age possible, this must be a record! |

The Diprose Award This is a Branch award named after our own Club's previous President, Bob Diprose. It is awarded to a branch member who is deemed to have contributed a great deal to the promotion of Lifesaving in the county. This year we are pleased to announce that it has been awarded to Pamela Shaw in recognition of the sterling work she has carried out in the field of competition. Not only has Pamela done very well as a competitor in her own right, but has guided the Club Squad to great heights during her incumbency as squad captain. Only last year Pamela attended a judges course and now helps out at Branch events in that capacity, if not competing herself. Both the Club and Sussex Branch owe much to Pamela's keeness and dedication over the years; this accolade we feel is greatly deserved. Recently after six years as our Competition Secretary, Pamela has decided, due to pressure of her job, to have a rest and has relinquished the post. Pamela has worked tirelessly for our Club as our Secrcreatry, and the squad has made remarkable inprovements. During her leadership we have been represented at Sussex Branch level, Regional level and at National level and have had some wonderful results. Pamela has been a National Champion and has seen her many charges blossom under her leadership; we have had the best results ever during her time as Secretary. The 2007 Worthig Town Cup was one of her spectacular triumphs with the senior team winning the event and the Geoff Taylor Trophy for the incident and the Rookies winning the trophy; a superb triple in front of the Mayor of Worthing. The Mayor was suitably impressed and invited the teams to visit the Mayor's parlour; this was particulalry enjoyed by the younger memebrs of the squad and a fitting reward for Pamela's leadership skills. Her enthusiasm knows no bounds and she has managed to keep the squad together during some very difficult times. Quite how we will find a replacement of such stature, we do not know. Pamela will still be a Trainer/Assessor and will hopefully compete for the Club for many years to come and we hope the momentum she has created will continue. Congratulations Pamela on a well deserved award.
