Special Awards

National Honours
Every year the Sussex Branch nominates members of clubs throughout Sussex for National Awards.  Clubs put forward names of their members for consideration by the awards sub-committee of the branch.  To qualify you have to be a full member of the RLSS.  Nominations are sent to headquarters for national ratification, and once these are cleared by the National Honours Committee, the various medals and certificates are awarded.
  • The Medal of Distinction is awarded for outstanding service at club or national level or notable contribution at national level.
  • The Certificate of Merit is awarded by the branch for ‘Meritorious Service’ cited and endorsed by the branch.
  • The Service Medal is presented for 12 years continuous service to the RLSS
  • The Certificate of Thanks is presented after 4 and 8 years' service

This year the following Club members have been nominated and will receive the following awards:

We would like to congratulate all the above members for achieving national recognition!

The Centenary Award

This award was instigated in 1991 to commemorate the Society Centenary, and is also presented for dedication to lifesaving, but is different from the Diprose in that it can be presented to gorups as well as individuals.
This year we are pleased to announce it is to be presented to a long serving member of our Club, Paul Olliver. Paul has been instrumental in creating the Branch Web-site and, as Web master, he is responsible for keeping the site updated, which he does in a matter of minutes after receiving new information. If you have not visited the site at www.rlss-sussex.co.uk, it is well worth a look - we had snowflakes on there at Christmas time; were there eggs at Easter? Ask Paul!
Congratulations to Paul on winning this prestigious award

Previous WLGC winners of this award are:

1994 Frances Gerrard and Betty Hakesley
1997 Worthing LGC Competition Squad

Betty Colquhoun Cup

The AGM will see the Betty Colquhoun Cup awarded for the thirteenth time. This award is given to a member who has made a significant contribution to Club activities. The winner is presented with the Cup for a year and a miniature replica to keep.
The recipient of the Cup this year is Frances Garrard, one of the Club's most experienced taechers and longest serving members. Frances has been involved with the Club for over 25 years and is the only Club member to have gained every award up to Distinction level and the Diploma. The Diploma was gained by producing a thesis on the teaching of the handicapped and less able and was achknowledged to be a benchmark for teaching in this very important area. The Diploma is not an easy award to gain and, as far as we know, this is only the second time it has been presented to a Sussex Branch member; a really superb achievement.
For many years Frances has taught the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification and has been the main trainer at the Prince Rregent Swimming Pool in Brighton. She has also been a Trainer/Assessor for the Worthing area for over 25 years and has taught and examined all types of lifesaving and resuscitation. Her forte has always been resuscitation and we are sure tha Frances has taught more people in resuscitation techniques than anyone else in the Sussex Branch. Her knowledge is legendary and we have relied on her for many of the more elusive skills required in teaching resuscitation. She has also been a mentor for many of our Club teachers and has passed on her undoubted skills to others.
We would like to thank Frances for her dedication and her contribution to the Club's success over so many years. we are delighted that this year the award goes to one of the longest serving members of the Club; yet another worthy winner of the Betty Colquhoun Cup.
